Burnett gets Opening Day nod

Clint Hurdle announced today that A.J. Burnett will take the hill on April 1st.

Burnett, 36, went 16-10 with a 3.51 ERA last season. Highlights of his 2012 campaign included eight wins in a row and throwing a one-hitter on July 31st vs. Chicago. In 10 outings between May 8th and June 28th, Burnett was 8-0 while posting a 2.18 ERA. Opponents hit just .218 against him in that span. Burnett was clearly a veteran leader for the young Bucs last season.

Hurdle also said that Wandy Rodriguez, one of the Pirates’ most consistent pitchers late in 2012, will pitch the second game of the year on April 3rd. After that, the rotation is not set, however.
