Starling-Marte Pirates Zoltan

In the latest edition of “Top 10 Right Now” on Friday night, MLB Network broke down the best left fielders in the game. ┬áThe Bucs’ Starling Marte ranked sixth on the list.

Here’s the full rundown (updated as they’re announced)
10. Brett Gardner
9. Josh Hamilton
8. Carlos Quentin
7. Daniel Nava
6. Marte
5. Shin-Soo Choo
4. Justin Upton
3. Alex Gordon
2. Bryce Harper
1. Matt Holliday

Brian Kenny, who hosts the Top 10 segments on MLBN, tweeted this the other night:

Kenny gave Marte more praise on the show, putting him at #4 overall on his personal list. On the other hand, Bill James was very critical of Marte and didn’t include him in his own rankings.

Marte hit .280/.343/.441 in his first full MLB season. His high K% and low BB% make him an unusual leadoff hitter, but he has settled into the lineup’s top spot and looks to start there again in ’14. Marte also swiped 41 bags, finishing third in the NL stolen base department.

He paired that solid offense with exceptional defense, saving 22 runs and posting a 10.1 UZR.

Best of all, he’s only 25 years old and under team control for the next five seasons.

The NL MVP, Andrew McCutchen, was named MLB’s #2 center fielder a few weeks ago. If Gregory Polanco pans out (13th best prospect in baseball), the Bucs will have one of the best outfields around.
