Pirates, MLB to wear special camo jerseys on Memorial Day

Last weekend, the Pirates wore their own set of camouflage jerseys:

Jeanmar Gomez
Pitcher Jeanmar Gomez models the Pirates’ camouflage jersey and hat on Friday, May 17th.

As you can see, the jersey was all-camo with the traditional names & numbers, and the hat was the classic black with a camo P.

On Monday, the Pirates and all teams across Major League Baseball will sport special uniforms to honor the military and celebrate Memorial Day. However, the jersey/hat combo will be the opposite of what we saw on Friday and Saturday.

The Memorial Day jerseys will have camouflage names & numbers, and the hats will feature a camo base with the traditional yellow P.

Here’s how the jersey looks:

The Pirates have caught fire over the past week, winning six of their last seven games. They are now 24-17 on the year, their best start since 1992. The Bucs play host to the Houston Astros, who come to PNC Park for the first time as an American League opponent. In honor of Armed Forces Day, the Pirates will show their military appreciation by wearing camouflage jerseys on Friday and Saturday. Giveaways this weekend will also be army-oriented: Free Shirt Friday with a camo design, A.J. Burnett camo jersey bobblehead on Saturday, and Burnett kids replica camo jersey on Sunday.

Andrew McCutchen GIF

Player to Watch: Andrew McCutchen, who hit plenty of hard balls during the Milwaukee series but didn’t exactly have the results to show for it. Cutch hit a bunch of “at ‘em” balls to the Brew Crew defense, though he did have a clutch walk-off HR on Tuesday and went 2-for-5 on Thursday. With rising temperatures in the ‘Burgh and some weak Houston pitching on the mound, the ball could carry well at PNC this weekend. McCutchen is 8-for-13 with three doubles and four RBI in his career vs. Jordan Lyles, Houston’s starter on Friday night. Hopefully Cutch can break out this series and help get the Pirates three victories.

First, it’s nice to see Free Shirt Friday back on the slate. The free shirts are an incredibly popular promotion, and they are starting to become a Friday night tradition at PNC. The designs are not known yet, but they should be on display at PirateFest (along with the other giveaways) like in past years.

Also, the bobblehead promotions really jump out at you when glancing over the list. The Pirates only had one bobblehead in each of the past two seasons (Neil Walker in 2011, Joel Hanrahan in 2012) despite their popularity. However, they’re busting out two for 2013 – Andrew McCutchen with his awards on April 20th and A.J. Burnett with a camo jersey on May 18. Both seem like really slick giveaways.

In addition to Burnett’s camo jersey bobblehead, the Bucs will also have a kids camouflage jersey giveaway on May 19th. This leads us to believe that they will wear their camo jerseys for a game or two next season, just as they did last year.

Another note about jerseys – there is a Pedro Alvarez “Sunday alternate jersey” giveaway on August 4th. Furthermore, there will be a “Sunday alternate cap” on June 16th. This seems to imply that a new jersey/hat combo will be introduced by the team in the near future. Really looking forward to see what the Pirates have in store.

The typical fireworks nights, Fan Jams, and Skyblasts are on the schedule again. The concert bands have not been announced yet.

The Jolly Roger flag and rally towels seem like solid giveaways, too. There’s a good assortment of kids Sunday promotions as usual.

It’s important to note that the Jolly Roger, Cutch bobblehead, A.J. bobblehead, and fleece scarf are only being given away to the first 25,000 fans. In the past, all promotions were usually given to all fans (except the kids giveaways, which are obviously ages 14 & younger).

We can’t wait to get our hands on some of these upon entering the gates next season. Only 134 more days…
