Dissecting the Schedule: April

We’ll spend time this week breaking down the Pirates’ 2013 schedule, month by month.

Schedule April

Notes:

– The Pirates have just two off days in April, the least of any month this season.

– The Bucs open against the Chicago Cubs; you may remember they started the 2011 season against them, though they played at Wrigley Field.

– They start the season at the friendly confines of PNC Park for the second consecutive year.

– The club will once again travel to the west coast in early April. They’ll stop in Los Angeles and Arizona before coming home for an extended homestand.

– That homestand, consisting of 10 games, will feature three 2012 playoff teams: the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, and Atlanta Braves.

– April is definitely a tough month for the Bucs:

– The Pirates will travel to the east side of the state for a four-game series against the Phillies. The Phils will be without their starting catcher, Carlos Ruiz. Chooch is suspended 25 games for amphetamine use.

– The team they’ll play the most in April: St. Louis – three at home, three on the road.

– Some cool promotional items will be given away at PNC in April, including an awesome A.J. Burnett free shirt and Andrew McCutchen bobblehead.

2013 Postgame Concert Bands

A few days ago, we previewed the Free Shirt Friday designs for 2013. Now, we’ll take a look at the four bands slated to perform after Pirates games this season.

Postgame concerts have become increasingly popular over the years at PNC Park, although it is difficult for them to attract top performers. There are clearly some ticket holders who attend the ballgame strictly for the musical performance (“The Concert Crowd”). These people aren’t too hard to locate, as they rarely wear Bucco gear, barely watch the game, and love to start the wave. There are some fans, however, who enjoy the product on the field both during and after the game. With that, here’s the lineup for this summer’s concerts…

Kool & the Gang

The first concert of the season features Kool & the Gang on June 1st. From Pirates.com:

[quote_center]Legendary R&B artists Kool & the Gang will perform after the Pirates battle the Cincinnati Reds as part of the annual Heritage Celebration weekend. The band that needs no introduction has sold over 70 million albums and produced 11 Top 10 hits including “Celebration,” “Joanna,” “Cherish,” “Ladies Night,”, “Too Hot” and “Get Down on it.”[/quote_center]

Last year’s band for the Heritage Celebration was Boyz II Men. Note that the start time for this game is 7:15, as opposed to the typical 7:05 first pitch. Here’s Celebration:

Blues Traveler

The next concert, Blues Traveler, is just two weeks later on June 15th. From Pirates.com:

[quote_center]Blues Traveler will perform after the Pirates take on the LA Dodgers. The popular band has sold more than 13 million combined units worldwide and in June, 2012 released their new album, “Suzie Cracks the Whip.” In the band’s more than 25 years on the music scene, their hits include “Hook,” “But Anyway” and “Run-Around,” which climbed as high as number eight on the Billboard Hot 100.[/quote_center]

Here’s Run-Around:

Third Eye Blind

Bucco fans will have to wait a little longer for the next act, as Third Eye Blind comes to PNC on the last day of August. From Pirates.com:

[quote_center]The rock band Third Eye Blind will perform live after the Pirates battle the St. Louis Cardinals. The highly acclaimed band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide and is best known for the hit songs “Semi-Charmed Life,” “Jumper,” and “How’s it Going to Be.”[/quote_center]

Here’s Semi-Charmed Life:

[divider type=”thin”]

Neon Trees

The fourth and final postgame concert comes after the last Saturday home game of the year, as Neon Trees will perform. From Pirates.com:

[quote_center]The rock band Neon Trees will perform live after the Pirates battle the Cincinnati Reds. The popular band broke onto the national music scene in 2008 and has achieved Platinum status for their hits “Animal” and “Everybody Talks.”[/quote_center]

Here’s Everybody Talks:

Last year’s concert lineup featured Boyz II Men, Daughtry, Styx, and Lifehouse. The bands this year aren’t too bad. Just as the Pirates.com description said, Kool & the Gang doesn’t really need an introduction. We don’t know much about Blues Traveler or Neon Trees, but Run-Around and Everybody Talks are recognizable. Third Eye Blind definitely has a few notable, popular songs.

It should also be noted that the Third Eye Blind and Neon Trees concerts will also feature the Skyblast fireworks shows.

All four postgame concerts are on Saturday nights, and should be well attended. Guarantee a seat and buy tickets HERE.

First, it’s nice to see Free Shirt Friday back on the slate. The free shirts are an incredibly popular promotion, and they are starting to become a Friday night tradition at PNC. The designs are not known yet, but they should be on display at PirateFest (along with the other giveaways) like in past years.

Also, the bobblehead promotions really jump out at you when glancing over the list. The Pirates only had one bobblehead in each of the past two seasons (Neil Walker in 2011, Joel Hanrahan in 2012) despite their popularity. However, they’re busting out two for 2013 – Andrew McCutchen with his awards on April 20th and A.J. Burnett with a camo jersey on May 18. Both seem like really slick giveaways.

In addition to Burnett’s camo jersey bobblehead, the Bucs will also have a kids camouflage jersey giveaway on May 19th. This leads us to believe that they will wear their camo jerseys for a game or two next season, just as they did last year.

Another note about jerseys – there is a Pedro Alvarez “Sunday alternate jersey” giveaway on August 4th. Furthermore, there will be a “Sunday alternate cap” on June 16th. This seems to imply that a new jersey/hat combo will be introduced by the team in the near future. Really looking forward to see what the Pirates have in store.

The typical fireworks nights, Fan Jams, and Skyblasts are on the schedule again. The concert bands have not been announced yet.

The Jolly Roger flag and rally towels seem like solid giveaways, too. There’s a good assortment of kids Sunday promotions as usual.

It’s important to note that the Jolly Roger, Cutch bobblehead, A.J. bobblehead, and fleece scarf are only being given away to the first 25,000 fans. In the past, all promotions were usually given to all fans (except the kids giveaways, which are obviously ages 14 & younger).

We can’t wait to get our hands on some of these upon entering the gates next season. Only 134 more days…
