#FTFTrivia Answer 2/21/13

Tonight we asked…

and the answer to tonight’s #FTFTrivia is…

Jack Wilson

Offensively, Jack Flash had his best season in 2004.  Among his 201 hits were 12 triples, making him the last Pirate to hit more than 10 in a season.  His .301 batting average helped him win a Silver Slugger, and he was the only Bucco to make the All-Star team that year.

Wilson is actually the only player to collect double digit triples in a season since the Pirates have moved to PNC Park.  The only other player to come close was Andrew McCutchen, who hit 9 in his rookie year.  The next Pirate to hit more than 10 will most likely be a right-handed hitter, considering the large left field and “North Side Notch” in left-center.

Starling Marte has the potential to hit plenty of triples, as he possesses a combination of speed and power. Bill James predicts Starling to hit 11 triples in 2013, while ZiPS projects 14.

#FTFTrivia Answer 2/14/13

Tonight we asked…

and the answer to tonight’s #FTFTrivia is…

Willie Stargell

In a late-May of 1968 game against the Cubs at Wrigley, where anything can happen, Pops crushed three bombs, doubled off the ivy wall, and singled to collect a total of 15 bases.  He led the offensive charge and drove in more runs than the Cubs even scored.  The Pirates won the game by a score of 13-6.

Stargell’s 15 total bases were brought up a few times throughout the 2012 season when Pedro Alvarez had a few games with two home runs and an extra base hit, but Pops’ record still stands going into 2013.

Tonight we asked…

and the answer to tonight’s #FTFTrivia is…

Jack Wilson

Wilson, just 23 years old at the time, let loose an errant throw in the top of the first of the Pirates’ second game ever at PNC Park. Aaron Boone reached on Wilson’s error, and Dmitri Young and Alex Ochoa crossed the plate to make it 3-0 in favor of Cincinnati. Despite Jack’s blunder, the Bucs went on to win the game, 6-5. Jumpin’ Jack Flash made plenty of spectacular plays to make up for his errors, such as this:

Alex Presley (Keith Allison)

Alex Presley

On April 20th of this year against the Cardinals, Alex Presley led off the bottom of the first with a drive off the CF wall, and ended up circling the bases for an inside-the-park home run.  Despite the quick offensive start, the Bucs couldn’t get anything else going and ended up losing to the Cardinals 4-1.  Presley’s four-bagger was the first of its kind by a Pirate since Freddy Sanchez did it in 2008.
